RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's basketball team and fifth year head coach Joel Hopkins released its 28-game schedule for their 2017-18 campaign Friday afternoon. The schedule features 16 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference games and 12 non-conference games.


Shaw finished the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 14-13, 10-6 in the CIAA and a Southern Division title after posting an 8-2 mark in the South. The Bears were picked to finish fifth overall and second in the division announced by the league's office on Oct. 5 for the 2017-18 slate.


The Bears will have 13 home contest this season and two neutral games. In their season debut, Shaw will participate in the CIAA/PSAC Challenge hosted by Shippensburg in Shippensburg, Pa. The Bears will face the Raiders on Nov. 10 and Lock Haven on No. 11.


On Nov. 14-18, the Bears will host Salem International (Nov. 14), Fort Valley State (Nov. 17) and Morehouse (Nov. 18) in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.


Shaw will hit the road for contest at Francis Marion on Nov. 21 and Clayton State (Nov. 29) before returning home to host Virginia Union in a nonconference tilt on Dec. 2. The Bears will begin CIAA play with Chowan (Dec. 12) and Elizabeth City State (Dec. 14) in C.C. Spaulding.


Before Christmas break, the Bears squad will compete in a tournament hosted by Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach, Fla. Shaw will face Puerto Rico-Rio Peidras on Dec. 16 and the Eagles on Dec. 17 at the ICI Center.


The Bears will host Barton for its final game for 2017 on Dec. 30 and then hit I-95 North for CIAA cross division play at Virginia Union (Jan. 4), Bowie State (Jan. 6) and Lincoln (Pa.) (Jan. 8). Shaw will have its first division contest at Livingstone on Jan. 13 prior to its last nonconference game at Salem International on Jan. 17.


With a home game versus Winston-Salem State on Jan. 20, the Bears will then travel to cross-town rival Saint Augustine's and Fayetteville State on Jan. 24 and Jan. 27.


The squad will return home to host Virginia State (Jan. 31), Johnson C. Smith (Feb. 3) and Livingstone (Feb. 7). On Feb. 10, Shaw will head to Winston- Salem, N.C. for a tilt with WSSU before concluding the regular-season with two home games versus cross-town rival Saint Augustine's (Feb. 17) and Fayetteville State (Feb. 21). The Bears will travel to Johnson C. Smith on Feb. 24.


The CIAA Tournament begins on Feb. 27-Mar. 3 at the Bojangles Coliseum and Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
