CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Shaw University men's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Preseason Poll, the conference announced Wednesday, Oct. 4.
The predicted order of finish and preseason player awards were voted on by the CIAA and the men's basketball association. Shaw has no players on the preseason all-conference team.
The Bears (74 points) were picked to finish third in the Southern Division in 2016-17 and wound up winning the division with a 10-6 record in the CIAA and 8-2 mark in the South. Shaw's coach Joel Hopkins returns five players from last season, and welcomes 10 newcomers including four DI transfers. The Bears finished the 2016-17 season 14-13 overall.
Virginia State University (107 points) was chosen as the season's top conference contender. Defending champions Bowie State University (101 points) was projected to finish second overall while Virginia Union University (96 points) and Winston-Salem State University (78 points) was selected third and fourth, respectively.
Shaw is will tipoff of the 2017-18 season at the CIAA/PSAC Challenge against Shippensburg on Nov. 10 and Lock Haven on Nov. 11 in Shippensburg, Pa.
