RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University men's basketball team closed out the regular-season with a 63-62 victory over Johnson C. Smith University Saturday afternoon inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The win improved Shaw to 14-12 overall, 10-6 CIAA and 8-2 within the Southern Division. For the Golden Bulls, JCSU falls to 10-16 overall, 6-10 in the CIAA and 3-7 in the South.
Shaw was led by senior Benji Bell (Gainesville, FL) who finished with 21 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Eric Banks (Jacksonville, FL) added 15 points while freshman DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and two assists.
The Bears shot 34.9 percent (22-63) from the floor, including 78.6 percent (11-14) from the charity stripe. JCSU (10-15, 6-9 CIAA) concluded the game shooting 33.9 percent (21-62) from the floor, 18.5 percent (5-27) from long distance and 68.2 percent (15-22) from the foul line.
Robert Davis led the Golden Bulls in scoring with 17 points, four assists and three rebounds while Gabon Williams added 16 points and four rebounds. Cayse Minor chipped in 13 points and four rebounds, following Malik Ford contributed 10 points, four rebounds and two blocks.
Shaw will now await the seeding for the 2017 CIAA Basketball Tournament that will be announced later on this evening.
