RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University men's basketball team suffered a 60-59 loss on a buzzer beater to Benedict College Wednesday night on the first day of the 2016 Shaw U Classic inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The loss drops Shaw to 5-6 overall while the Tigers improve to 4-5 on the year.
Russell Robinson, Jr. (Chicago, IL) led the Bears with 11 points in the contest, followed by Khaliq Williams (Jacksonville, FL) with 10 points. Shaw shot 45.2 percent (19-42) from the floor, 36.8 percent (7-19) from the 3-point line and 77.8 percent (14-18) from the charity stripe. Benedict outscored Shaw 44-28 in bench points and 22-18 off of points in the paint.
The Tigers earned the game's first points with a 3-pointer from Rodney Richard but the Bears answered back scoring three-straight points to tie the contest at 3-3. At the 17:03 mark, the Bears would take its first lead after a 3-pointer from Robinson, Jr. The Bears held on to its lead for the remainder of the half including a 16-point lead – it's largest of the game before Benedict scored seven-straight to cut Shaw's lead 34-25 at halftime.
Benedict went on a 12-3 run in the second half to tie the game at 37-37 with 16:03 on the clock. Three minutes later, the Tigers would add eight more points before a 3-pointer from Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) snapped a scoring drought for Shaw as the clock showed 43-40 in favor of the Tigers. Shaw trailed over the next eight minutes before the Bears tied the game at 49-49 on a free-throw from Benji Bell (Gainesville, FL) and again at 52-52 but this time with two free-throws from Williams with 3:38 left.
The game would see two more lead changes before the Bears established a 6-2 run but that would be short lived as Jaylin Gilbert knocked down a 3-pointer to close the gap to one point (58-57). A foul by BC sent Williams to the line with five seconds remaining in regulation. He would sink the first free-throw but miss the second shot which allowed the Tigers to come down the court as Gilbert drained a 3-pointer for the game winning score as time expired.
Gilbert led Benedict in scoring with 16 points, followed by both Mike Udume and Brandon Morris with 12 points apiece.
Shaw will look to bounce back and wrap up the Shaw U Classic with a nightcap versus Claflin at 7:30 p.m.
