MEN’S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF ELIZABETH CITY STATE FOR 71-67 CONFERENCE WIN

ELIZABETH CITY, NC. – Shaw University senior Benji Bell (Gainesville, FL) scored 28 points and netted seven-straight points in the final 2:23 to lead the Bears to a 71-67 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference win over Elizabeth City State University Tuesday night inside the R.L. Vaughan Center.

 

Bell shot 8-for-16 from the floor, including five 3-pointers and finished 7-for-7 from the foul line. Senior David Madol (Manchester, NH) contributed 18 points and seven rebounds and senior Larry Richardson, II (Garner, NC) scored 10 points as Shaw (4-3, 1-0 CIAA) snapped a three-game skid.

 

The Bears led 9-0 in the opening behind Madol's five points. The game tied twice at the 12:08 mark and the 7:18 mark before Shaw used a 13-4 scoring advantage to lead 33-24. The Bears would lead 43-32 at halftime after a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Bell.

 

Leading 57-54 midway through the second half, ECSU (1-7, 0-1 CIAA) pulled within one point after a scoring ratio of 9-9 between both teams. The Vikings tied and took the lead at 67-66 on two free-throws from John Maynor but Bell scored a layup to put the Bears back up which would cement the win with seven points down the stretch.

 

Elon Edwards led ECSU with 16 points while Kyree Marshall recorded a double-double 14 points and 11 rebounds, following Maynor with 11 points and Shyheid Petteway with 10 points.

 

Shaw will continue its road skid with a CIAA contest at Chowan on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
