BEARS OPEN 2016-17 SEASON WITH 102-73 WIN OVER MORRIS

RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University men's basketball team opened up its 2016-17 season with a 102-73 victory over Morris College for a non-conference tilt in front of a crowded C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium led behind senior Larry Richardson, II's (Garner, NC) new career-high 35 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Richardson, II shot 8-for-11 from behind the arc for 73 percent.

Senior DeAaron Ward (Wilson, NC) recorded a double-double and career-high 18 points and 18 rebounds while senior David Madol (Manchester, NH) also registered a double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Russell Robinson, Jr. () would round out the double-digit scoring for Shaw with 15 points and eight rebounds in the win.

The Bears (1-1) opened up the contest with a 6-2 lead sparked by two three-pointers from Richardson, II. Shaw led over the next eight minutes until the Hornets cut the lead to one point with a three-pointer from Jamond Silverman with 10:38 left. Morris (0-1) got its first lead of the game on a tip-in from Deandre Hamilton but that was short lived as the Bears planted a 10-2 run with under seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Shaw would lead by as many as 17 points in which Ward accounted for three dunks over the course of three minutes prior to going into the locker room with a 48-33 lead.

At the break, the Bears shot 46.3 percent (19-41) from the field led by Richardson, II's 14 points and Wards' 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hornets had no answer for the Bears in the second half as Shaw kept the momentum going when Richardson, II drained two back-to-back three-pointers to stretch Shaw's lead 54-35. The Bears would produce its largest lead of the contest at the 2:10 mark (32 points) as Shaw cruised to victory by outscoring Morris 54-40 in the final half.

Shaw held a 52-34 scoring advantage in the paint while earning 29 points off of turnovers and translated 24 points compared to the Hornets 14 points off second chances. The Bears tallied 12 points in fast breaks for the contest.

Shaw will return to action on Friday, Nov. 18 when they travel to Morehouse College for a non-conference tilt in Atlanta, Ga. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
