EIGHT BEARS GARNER ALL-CIAA RECOGNITION, HUNT NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

SALEM, Va. Eight Shaw University football student-athletes were selected to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Team and All-Rookie Teams announced Friday, Nov. 9. Junior linebacker Devon Hunt (Hamlet, NC) was chosen as the 2018 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.

 

Hunt led the CIAA in tackles per game with an average of 9.8 and a total of 98 on the season. He was a 3X CIAA Linebacker of the Week and finished 2018 with 15.5 tackle for losses, four interceptions, two pass breakups, one fumble recovery and a pick six.

 

Additionally, Hunt along with junior tight end Kevonta Moses (Fort Myer, FL) and junior offensive lineman Keanu Gonzales was selected as First Team recipients. Moses had 17 receptions for 234 yards and scored two touchdowns this season for the Bears while Gonzales led the offensive line unit with a total offense of 3,117 yards, posting 22.9 points per game and gathering a total of 2,377 passing yardage and 740 rushing.

 

Junior receiver Marquis Gorham (Greenville, NC), sophomore receiver Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL) and sophomore defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) all tabbed Honorable Mention. The receiving duo combined for 1,274 reception yardage for Shaw this season as Gorham led with 60 catches for 716 yards and six touchdowns this year while Bender registered 45 catches for 558 yards and four touchdowns.

 

Scroggins was the team's fourth-leading tackler this year with 53 total (38 solo) and an average of 5.3 tackles per outing – which ranked 16th in the league, eight tackle for losses, two pass breakups and one interception.

 

As for the All-Rookie Team, Shaw had two players make the list including freshman offensive lineman Tyrese Bobbitt (Creedmoor, NC) and defensive lineman Mark Shannon (Greensboro, NC). Bobbitt played an instrumental part of the offensive line at the center position while Shannon recorded nine tackles (1.1 tackles per game), four tackle for losses and one sack.

 

The Bears concluded the 2018 season 5-5 overall and 4-2 in CIAA action and placed second overall in the Southern Division with a mark of 4-1 under the leadership of head coach Adrian Jones in third season.
