SIX SHAW BEARS GARNER ALL-CIAA ACCOLADES, THREE NAMED TO THE ALL-CIAA ROOKIE TEAM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), with its Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association, releases the 2017 All-CIAA First, Second, and Honorable Mention Football Teams. Shaw University had six players make the All-CIAA Team, including sophomore Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) and freshman Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) whom both were named First-Team All-CIAA.

 

Junior defensive lineman Keith Alston (Eggharbor City, NJ) was selected Second-Team All-Conference, while junior running back Uriah Bethea (Upper Marlboro, MD), freshman defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) and junior offensive lineman Justus Sapp (Franklinton, NC) were all chosen All-CIAA Honorable Mention.

 

No surprise for Hunt as he was named First-Team All-CIAA for the second year in a row.  The 6-foot-1 linebacker led the Bears in tackles this season with 90 total tackles, including 59 solo. The former CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year tallied two sacks, 8.5 tackle for loss and two pass breakups during his sophomore campaign.

 

Scroggins had a stellar rookie season for the Bears. The 5-foot-10 defensive back recorded 70 tackles – the Bears second leading tackler to go along with 13.5 tackle for loss, three pass breakups, two sacks and two interceptions for the season for the First-Team All-Conference honor.

 

Alston earned Second-Team All-Conference after producing 26 tackles, five tackle for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and fumble recovery in his first season as Shaw Bears. He was named CIAA Defensive Lineman of the week once this season.

 

Bethea led the running game this season for the Bears which led to the All-CIAA Honorable Mention honor this season. He accounted for 402 yards on 83 total carries and four touchdowns. His best game came against Elizabeth City State where he rushed 12 times for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Freshman defensive back, Sherman tabbed honorable mention for his performance this season as a Shaw Bear. He registered 46 tackles (fourth on the team), including seven breakups, .5 tackle for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception this season.

 

Sapp wrapped up the honorable mention for Shaw as led the offensive unit that produced 2770 total yards of offense.

 

In addition, Shaw had three players make the All-CIAA Rookie Team that featured Scroggins, Sherman and wide receiver Daniel Bender (Jacksonville, FL).

 

Bender finished his rookie season with 346 receptions yards on 29 catches while leading the receiving unit in touchdowns with four on the year.
