CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference has named Shaw University freshman defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) as it's Defensive Back and Rookie of the Week for of Oct. 29 (week 9) announced Tuesday morning.
Scroggins received the honors after leading the Bears defense with 13 total tackles, including 12 solo, one tackle for loss and an interception in the loss at Winston-Salem State on Oct. 28. The honors give Scroggins his second defensive back and rookie of the week accolades for 2017.
On the young season, Scroggins has the team's second-best 63 total tackles (50 solo) to average seven tackles per game. The 5-foot-10 stud has recorded two sacks, two interceptions and one fumble recovery on his freshman campaign thus far.
Additionally, the office of sports information will hold a football press conference on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at 12 noon in the dance studio located in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bears (3-6, 2-4 CIAA) will conclude their regular season with a home contest with cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University (4-5, 4-2 CIAA) for Homecoming and Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 4. Kickoff is slated for 12 noon at Durham County Memorial Stadium.
