CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Shaw University head football coach Adrian Jones and freshman defensive back Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) were honored as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach of the Week, Defensive Back of the Week and Rookie of the Week announced by the league Monday afternoon.
Coach Jones guided the Bears football program to their first win of the 2017 season with a 34-27 victory over Malone Saturday, Sept. 16. This is Jones' first CIAA football coach of the week honor.
Scroggins was named CIAA Football Defensive Back of the Week and Rookie of the Week for his performance in Shaw's win at Malone. The 5-foot-10 defensive back registered a career-high 11 tackles (10 solo) and two tackle for losses last weekend. This is also Scroggins first award on the season.
Shaw (1-2) will begin conference play on the road when they travel to Bowie State University on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.
In addition, the office of sports information will hold a football press conference on Wednesday, Sept. 20 at 12 noon in the dance studio located in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
