RALEIGH, N.C.  – In search of their first win of the 2017 campaign, the Shaw University football team will host Malone University on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Durham County Memorial Stadium. It will be the first meeting between both institutions in program history. Kickoff time is scheduled for 1 p.m.


It will be the Bears (0-2) second home game of the season, Shaw loss to New Haven in the season opener on Sept. 2, 31-20. Malone (0-1) will also be looking for their first win on the season as well, having loss to Taylor University back on Sept. 2.

Shaw has lost its first two contest to quality teams, including last weekend's setback at FCS Division I opponent N.C. Central. The Bears will look to get on track against a defense in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) that allowed 38.3 points per game and 28.0 points per game this season. As a unit, SU is averaging 219.5 yards (87 rushing, 132.5 passing) but has allowed their opponents to average 133.5 on the ground and 268.0 through the air for an average of 401.5 yards of offense.


Senior quarterback Darron Downing, Jr. (Portsmouth, VA) has completed 18-of-39 passes for 234 yards while sophomore Tevin Perry (Bunn, NC) accounts for 67 total rushing yards on 23 carries and one touchdown. Senior Trevante Long (Greenbelt, MD) leads the receivers with eight receptions and 159 yards.


On defense, the Bears are led by sophomore Devon Hunt (Rockingham, NC) who has registered 13 total tackles (6.5 tackles per game) and a tackle for loss. He was named CIAA Linebacker of the Week after recording a game-high 10 tackles at N.C. Central. Freshman defensive back Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) follows Hunt with 10 total tackles (5.0 tackles per game).


In their last outing, Malone tallied 308 yards of total offense compared to their opponents who hauled in 419. The Pioneers charted 326 yards in passing but accounted for -18 yards on the ground. John Lacucci completed 24-of-39 passes for 326 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.


Eian Elsass led the Pioneers receiving unit with 11 receptions worth 146 yards while Ryan Weber led the defense with 19 tackles (13 solo). Malone is led by Fred Thomas in his second season.
