DURHAM, N.C. – Senior wide receiver Trevante Long (Greenbelt, NC) recorded 121 yards through the air and sophomore Tevin Perry (Bunn, NC) rushed for 54 yards and one touchdown but the Shaw University football team dropped a 31-20 decision to the visiting Chargers of the University of New Haven at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Shaw drops to 0-1 on the start and New Haven earns their first win on the young season at 1-0.
The Chargers scored the game's first touchdown with 2:05 left in the first quarter on an eight play drive for 62 yards, ignited by a picked pass of the Bears at New Haven's 38. Shaw would respond in the second quarter when junior Coleman Blackston (Baltimore, MD) found the endzone on a five-yard rush with 11:29 on the game clock which tied the game 7-7.
Still in the second quarter, New Haven added to their score after Ajee Patterson threw a 67-yard pass to teammate Justine White before placing a 22-yard field goal from Danny Stock to extend their lead 14-7 over Shaw and eventually holding on to that lead heading into intermission.
Despite the deficit entering the third stanza, Shaw did a better job from a season ago in the third quarter led by a Perry's touchdown with 11:11 remaining to pull the Bears within three (17-14) but New Haven made quick work of the Bears secondary when Patterson completed a 64-yard pass to Devin Martin for the Chargers 24-14 lead.
New Haven would score one more time in the fourth to stretch their lead 31-14 before senior Donald Jones, Jr. (Smithfield, NC) recovered a fumble and ran for 65-yards for his fourth career touchdown to cut the lead 31-20 with 45 seconds left to play but the Bears simply ran out of time, as New Haven survived for the win.
Overall, Shaw finished with just 283 total yards that included 120 on the ground and 163 through the air compared to the Chargers 399 total yards (71 rushing, 328 passing). Offensively, Long hauled in five receptions for the 121 yards while senior Will Davis (Cleveland, OH) was responsible for two receptions and 12 yards. Perry earned his 54 yards on 11 carries and scored his second career touchdown in the third quarter on a seven-yard rush, followed by junior Uriah Bethea (Upper Marlboro, MD) with 29 rushing yards on nine carries.
Defensively, the Bears were led by senior Odie Harris (Houston, TX) who tallied a game-high six tackles while freshman Kevin Sherman (Powder Springs, GA) and junior Keith Alston (Eggharbor City, NJ) both contributed five tackles apiece. Each player had one assisted tackle for the game and Sherman accounted for three breakups and one forced fumble.
Shaw will return to action Saturday, Sept. 9 at Division I North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C. with a kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.
