Evans Named Preseason All-CIAA
PETERSBURG, Va.. - Shaw University cornerback Darnell Evans was named to the Preseason All-CIAA team it was announced at the conference's football media day held on the campus of Virginia State. In addition, Shaw was picked to finish fifth in the conference by the CIAA Football Coaches Association.
Evans (Jr., 5-9, 181, Madison, NJ), who was named an All-American after his freshman season in 2010, pulled in six interceptions last season - good for second in the conference. He also amassed 35 tackles. He also broke up six passes in 2011.
The Bears, who finished 3-7 last season, were picked to finish fifth overall, and fourth in the Southern Division. Winston-Salem State, the defending conference champion, was picked to win the conference and division. The coaches predicted that Elizabeth City State would finish second overall and top the Northern Division.
Shaw opens their season on the road on Thursday, August 30 when they face Charleston (W.Va.). They open their home season on September 8 when they host Miles College.
