Shaw Falls to Mount Olive 8-3

 

(Mount Olive, NC) - The Shaw baseball team committed five errors and allowed a total of six unearned runs, falling to Mount Olive 8-3.

 

Shaw (3-3) collected eight hits, but four of those came in the fourth when they scored all three runs and tied the game.

 

Down 3-0 after three innings, the Bears roared  back in the fourth.  Franklyn Johnson led off with a single, followed by Alberto Johnson, who singled as well.  Rakeem Lewis later singled, driving home Franklyn Johnson.  Carlos Aponte then singled, driving home two runs to tie the score.

 

The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when the Trojans took advantage of two Shaw errors and scored an unearned run off of reliever Roy Maddox

 

The game blew open in the seventh when Mount Olive turned two walks, two hits and two Shaw errors into four runs - none earned. 

 

The Bears did not make a serious offensive charge after the fourth inning,  managing only two hits the rest of the game.

 

C.J Middlebrook started the game for the Bears, pitching four innings and giving up three runs, two earned.  He gave up five hits, walked three and struck out none.  Maddox (1-1) relieved Middlebrook and pitched two and one-third innings, giving up five runs on only one hit - none of the runs were earned.  Donald Robertson finished up the game, giving up two hits and no runs over the final one and two-thirds innings.

 

Lewis had two hits, an RBI and scored one run in three plate appearances.  Jerrell Goings had two hits in four plate appearances.

 

The Bears travel to Columbia, SC, on Saturday for a doubleheader at Benedict.  First pitch is 1:00 p.m.  The Bears return home Feb. 26 and play Benedict in a doubleheader at Lions Park.  First pitch is 1:00.
