(SAAC)
CONSTITUTION
Article I
1. Name
1.1.1. The name of the committee shall be “Shaw University’s Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee” abbreviated “SU-SAAC”.
Article II
2. Purpose
2.1.1. To act as a vehicle of communication between Athletics Department, Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) and the student-athletes participating in the athletic programs sponsored at Shaw University.
2.1.2. To promote student-athlete involvement in NCAA, CIAA, campus and community service activities and projects.
2.1.3. To encourage communication, unity and support between and amongst student-athletes.
2.1.4. To include other purposes and objectives as outlined by the NCAA-SAAC:
a. Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure.
b. Solicit student-athlete response to proposed legislation.
c. Suggest potential NCAA legislation.
d. Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest.
e. Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA.
f. Promote a positive student-athlete image.
2.1.5. To improve the image of all student-athletes on campus and in the community.
Article III
3. Membership
3.1.1. Membership shall consist of two representatives from each athletic team, cheerleading team, student trainers and student sports information assistants.
3.1.2. Members shall be selected by the head coach/athletic staff personnel or elected by peers using the following criteria:
a. Must meet NCAA and CIAA certification/eligibility criteria.
b. Must maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
c. Must be in good standing with the Shaw University’s Code of Conduct.
d. Must be enrolled as full-time student (unless a graduating senior).
e. Students who are affiliated with athletics may also participate subject
to NCAA and CIAA guidelines.
3.1.3. Each member shall serve the committee for two years and may be re-elected/appointed for one additional term. Elections/Appointments shall be determined in the spring semester of each academic year. Each appointee must be enrolled for the academic year.
3.1.4. Membership shall be terminated in the following ways:
a. Resignation by member.
b. Two-thirds vote of the committee members.
c. Member is no longer a member of the team.
d. Member no longer meets the above criteria.
Article IV
4. Conduct
4.1.1. SU-SAAC members must be aware that they are representatives of not only their respective sport or organization but also Shaw University, CIAA and NCAA and should act in accordance with each of their codes of conduct.
4.1.2. SU-SAAC members who do not follow the policies expected of student athletes will be referred to the SAAC Athletic Executive Board (See 8.1.3).
Article V
5.1.1. Officers
5.1.2. The officers of the SU-SAAC shall be President, Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer and Parliamentarian.
5.1.3. The SU-SAAC members shall nominate officers. A majority vote shall be necessary to elect. All officers shall take office at the close of the session in which they are elected.
5.1.4. All officers shall serve for one two year term.
5.1.5. All officers are allowed one additional term after they complete their first term.
5.1.6. Duties:
a. President - It shall be the duty of the President to preside at all meetings of SU-SAAC, and to assign and appoint committees as deemed necessary to carry out the business of the committee.
b. Vice-President – It shall be the duty of the Vice-President to serve in the absence of the President, and assume whatever duty assigned by the President.
c. Secretary-Treasurer – It shall be the duty of the Secretary-Treasurer to record, distribute, and file minutes for the committee, keep record of money received, and be responsible for all financial transactions of the committee.
d. Parliamentarian - It shall be the duty of the Parliamentarian to maintain order in all committee meetings.
Article VI
6.1.1. Meetings
6.1.2. Meetings shall be held at least once a month.
6.1.3. Future meetings and dates will be voted on at a prior meeting.
6.1.4. Meeting will follow parliamentary procedure.
Article VII
7.1.1. Voting and Amendments
7.1.2. Amendments and policy changes must be submitted in a proposal form to the members of SU-SAAC and Advisor for approval. Proposed changes must be submitted at least one meeting prior to the meeting in which a vote is expected.
7.1.3. One-half of the members must be present to constitute a quorum.
7.1.4. A two-thirds (2/3rd) vote by present members is required for ratification of amendment to the constitution or change in policy.
7.1.5. SU-SAAC members are restricted to one vote per member. Proxy voting will not be permitted.
Article VIII
8.1.1. Constitution Regulations
8.1.2. This constitution is subject to all regulations governing affiliate organizations of Shaw University, CIAA and NCAA are subject to change and amended by provisions set forth by SU-SAAC Constitution in Article VII 7.1.4.
8.1.3. This constitution will be ratified upon the approval of Advisor of SU-SAAC and the SAAC Athletic Executive Board (Athletic Director, Senior Woman Administrator, Faculty Athletic Representative, Director of Compliance, and one Coach).
