Raleigh, NC - (March 31, 2009) The Lady Bears of Shaw University ended the month of March flying high over the Tigers of Saint Paul's College at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.  The Bears snatched a double victory winning 12-11 and 13-1.

The first game was exciting and garnered an extra inning.  The Bears were up but the Tigers rallied back and they had to play.  It was not an easy game but through perseverance, minimal errors and determination, the Bears prevailed in the victory.  Malta Gumbs hit the winning run.  Asked how she felt about the win, she stated, "Yo me siente mu y contenta (I am so excited)."  The game started slow but the level of play shifted in the fourth inning and the team came together and played well.  Kim Miller, Head Softball Coach for Shaw stated, "This is the first time that the team has played well collectively this season.  They are continuing to play better and execute better.  If I had to name a player of the game, Malta would be my choice with Samantha Bohn as the co-player of the game."  Bohn pitched the first game of the match.  "The team played Virginia State on Monday and lost the first game because they lost defense in the last inning allowing VSU to win by one point.  Improvement continues to show in each game but we have to finish."  Crystal Sanders hit a homerun in the match; she scored one Monday against Virginia State as well.

In the second game, the Bears swallowed their opponent 13-1.  Sanders pitched this game and also posted two rbi's.  Jade Bibb went 3 for 2 with a double, one hit and two rbi's.  Curtisha Jones had two hits and one walk.  Rebecca Hyppolite went one for one with a hit and Bohn had a triple, two hits and two rbi's.

Pace University Sweeps Bears in Doubleheader

Raleigh, NC – (March 19, 2009) The Lady Bears of Shaw University played Pace University in a doubleheader match at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.  Both contests were challenging for the Bears as they lost 21-3 and 16-1 respectively.

In the second game, the Lady Bears got off to a much better start and showed better offensive and defensive poise.  Starting pitcher Crystal Sanders hit a homerun and the Bears continued to roll them up and out.  The momentum of the game shifted towards favorable play by Pace.  The Bears started making errors that allowed runs to mount with Pace scoring several homeruns in the contest.
