FIRST-TEAM SELECTIONS ADVANCE ON TO
ALL-AMERICAN BALLOT
AIKEN, S.C.—With regular season play and conference
tournaments completed, the 2004-05 Daktronics Division II
Women’s Basketball South Atlantic All-Region teams have been
released. Four of the 10 players selected will be competing
in this week’s NCAA Division II Tournament.
Kiarsha Curtis (Shaw University), Crystal Clary
(Lenoir-Rhyne College), Allyson Hardy (Bowie State
University), Joy Hairston (Shaw University), and
Lauren Goss (Johnson C. Smith University) head up the
First-Team.
The Second-Team members are: Brooke Johnson
(Carson-Newman College), Cassie King (North Carolina
Central University), Rebecca Wessinger (Presbyterian
College), Veronica Taylor (Wingate University), and
Celeste Trahan (Elizabeth City State University).
Curtis, a 5-8 senior from Capital Height, Md., led
Shaw University to a 29-1 record, the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular season and
tournament titles, and a number two national ranking.
Curtis averaged 17.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, and 3.5 spg as the
Lady Bears will host this weekend’s NCAA South Atlantic
regional with a 19-game winning streak.
Clary, a 6-1 senior center from Hampton, Va., is a
two-time First-Team All-Region selection. She averaged 16.5
ppg and 10.9 rpg in posting 12 double doubles for Lenoir-Rhyne.
She led the conference and ranked 12th in
Division II in rebounding.
Hardy, a 5-6 senior guard from Germantown, Md., led
the CIAA in scoring at 21.7 ppg. A former CIAA Player of
the Week, Hardy became Bowie State’s all-time leading
scorer earlier this season and ranks in the top seven in the
conference in career points (1,971) and assists (459).
Hairston, a 6-1 senior guard from Durham, N.C., was
another key cog in the Shaw team that is 29-1 and ranked
second in Division II. She averaged 18.6 ppg and 6.6 rpg in
twice being named the CIAA Player of the Week.
Goss, a 5-10 senior forward from Morrow, Ga., just
missed averaging a double double with 17.5 ppg and 9.7 rpg.
She ranked in the top five in the conference in scoring,
rebounding, blocks, and field goal percentage.
First-Team selections will now go on the national ballot for
All-America consideration.
