Shaw Competes in Historic Penn Relays
Philadelphia, PA--
Shaw University men’s and women’s track and field teams competed
at the 109th running of the Penn Relays at the University
of Pennsylvania along side of some of the fastest athletes in the
world.
The Lady Bears were up on
the track first as they ran on the first day of the meet which was
Thursday, April 24. The first event was the 4x100 meter relay that
clocked in at 49.55. The team consisted of seniors Lisa Bradsher,
Asiyah Pelzer, Ife' Moore and sophomore Candis Johnson. In the
afternoon session of day one the women ran 3:56.83 in the 1600-meter
relay. The team anchored by Pelzer consisted of Bradsher, Johnson
and freshman Patricia Beckham. Highlights from day one included a
female from Long Beach Poly High School in California clocking in at
the a 51.3 split on the anchor leg of the 1600 meter relay,
recording the fastest split in Penn Relays’ history.
On day two of the meet the
men’s team was first up on the track in the 4x100 meter relay
running a disappointing 45.14 due to injuries and bad exchanges. The
team consisted of David McIntrye , Stanley Knox, Aaron Montague ,
and Anthony Connelly. Connelly, Knox, McIntrye, and DeSean Williams
would run the 4x 200-meter relay also in the mourning session
finishing with a time of 1:32.66. Johnson, Moore, Pelzer, and
Bradsher ran the 4-x200 meter relay for the women running a 1:43.49.
In the night session the men ran the 1600-meter relay and the
1600-meter sprint medley relay running 3:24.25 and 3:4.41
respectively. Running the 1600-meter relay was Jeffrey Jackson,
Montague, Williams, and Connelly. On the sprint medley Jackson,
Knox, and McIntrye were joined by Maurice Styles Jr. to finish out
the meet.
On the final day of the
meet the Shaw University track and field teams relaxed in the stands
as a part of a crowd of nearly 40,000 raging track and field fans
watch the USA vs. the World. The segment of the meet was sponsored
by Nike and put some of the top American sprinter against relay
teams from other countries such as Jamaica and Russia. The highlight
of the day was the appearance of the Worlds Fastest Man Tim
Montgomery, as he anchored the USA to victory in the 4x 100-meter
relay.

Bears Finish Seventh at Championships
The Shaw men's outdoor track and field
team finished seventh in the CIAA Outdoor Track and Field
Championships with a score of 29.50. For complete results log

Shaw Competes at Norfolk State RelaysNORFOLK , VA-- The
Shaw University Men's Outdoor Track team competed at the Norfolk State
Relays this past weekend. The field of schools included Hampton
University, Virginia State University, West Virginia State, Delaware
State University, and Norfolk State University.
In the night cap of the first day of the meet the
Bears took second place in the Distance Medley Relay despite
inclimate weather. The team of De'Sean Williams, Anthony Connelly,
Jeff Jackson, and Maurice Styles Jr. ran 11:18 on a wet track.
In day two of the meet the sun began to shine as
Maurice Styles, Jr. ran 4:21.11 in the 1500 meters to earn a top
eight finish. Tiotta Gills finished fifth in the 5000 meters with a
time of 20:21.54. In the field events Stanley Knox long jumped 21
feet to finish seventh. Knox also leaped 41 feet and 1 inch in the
triple jump. In the throws Jeff Jackson and Marquis Poteat finished
fifth and sixth in the Javelin with throws of 98 feet and 96 feet
respectively. Poteat also finished eighth in the shot with a mark of
35 feet 10 inches. The relays are where the team excelled most. The
team of David McIntyre , Connelly, Williams , and Jackson ran 3:22
in the Sprint Medley Relay to finish second with Delaware State. The
race came down to the last 100 meters. In the 1600 meter relay the
Bears ran 3:32 with Jackson, Aaron Montague, Styles and Williams
anchoring, finishing third.
The Bears next meet will be the CIAA championships
April 17 -18 in Charlotte, NC on the campus of Johnson C. Smith
Unversity.

Shaw Competes at Livingstone Freeman Classic
SALISBURY, NC--Shaw University men's team
finished sixth at the Livingstone Freeman Classic, scoring only 37
points, finishing behind CIAA rival Livingstone College, who won the
meet and in front of Johnson C. Smith.
Maurice Styles who has been a spark for the men's
team all season finished third in the 1500m with a time of 4:07.
Lloyd Knight finished fourth in the 110H running a 16.68. In the
shot put Marquis Poteat finished fifth throwing 38 feet 4 1/2 inches
and Jeffery Jackson threw 100 feet 3 inches in the javelin before
running first leg on the 1600 meter relay team, which finished
second. The team consisted of Jackson, Aaron Montague, Williams, and
was anchored by Anthony Connelly. The team didn't fair well in the
relays as they where disqualified in two of the three. The Bears
finished second in the 3200 meter relay only to be disqualified for
running out of the exchange zone. Stanley Knox jumped 21 feet six
inches as the lone scorer from the jumps.
The Bears will be in action again this weekend at
April 11-12 at the Norfolk State Relays in Norfolk, Va.

Shaw's Top finishers in the L.T. Walker Meet
DURHAM - Marquis Poteat - finished first in men's
javelin (105' 8"), second in discus throw
(83' 3") and second in shot put (36' 11")and Lloyd Knight
- first in men's 400m hurdles (1:03.54) and second in 110m
hurdles (16.23);
Shaw won three of the four relays, running to victory in the women's
4x100m relay (49.17), the women's 4x400m relay (3:59.02), and
the men's 4x400m relay (3:33.77).
