SHAW SCORES THIRD & FIFTH
IN VSU MID-WEEK TRACK CHALLENGE


April 2, 2008Petersburg, VA – The Shaw University Men’s & Women’s Track teams traveled to the campus of Virginia State University as they hosted a Mid-Week Challenge.  The Women’s Track team tallied 104.50 points for a third place finish as the Men’s Track team finished in fifth place with 65.50 points.  

For the women’s track team, the highlights included first place finishes by senior Persis Brown (Spring Lake, NC / Social Work) and senior Sheniqua Souter (Brooklyn, NY / Elementary Education). Brown was the top performer in the shot put with the longest throw of 37 – 03.00 as Souter topped all competitors in the javelin event with a throw of 114 – 09; 15 feet further than the second place finisher. Also, freshman Delilah Badgett (Sharonhill, PA / Liberal Studies) secured a second place finish in the first section of the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.55.  

On the men’s side, the highlights included first place finishes by sophomore Clinton Rogers (Clinton, MD / Kinesiotheraphy) and junior Vitalis Wekheye (Nambale, Kenya / Biology). In section three of the 400 meters dash, Rogers finished with a top time of 52.37 Wekheye took section two of the 800 meters run with a time of 2:02.91. Senior Marc Allen (Fort Washington, MD / Criminal Justice/ Sociology) finished second in the 800 meters event with a time of 2:07.03 Also, Shaw scored second place finishes with sophomore Christopher Harris’ (Washington, D.C. / Mass Communications) javelin throw of 133 – 02 and freshman Jared Arnold’s (Philadelphia, PA / Adapted PE) time of 16:45.64 in the 5,000 meters event. In addition, the Bears nabbed a third place finish with sophomore Paul Graham’s (Oxford, GA / Business Administration) high jump of 6 – 00.00  

Next up for the track teams is the Duke Invitational in Durham, NC. The two-day event will be held Friday, April 4th and Saturday, April 5th.
