MEN’S TENNIS TAKES THRONE AS KINGS OF THE WEST
April 2, 2008 – Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Men’s Tennis Team secured their first CIAA Western Division crown after they displayed dominance in their divisional dual with the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. The Bears were Eastern Divisional Champions the past eight seasons; prior to being drafted to the Western Division. The competition elapsed nearly four hours as Shaw defeated JCSU for the 8 – 1 triumph. Shaw sits on its throne with a record of 8 – 4 Overall and 6 – 0 CIAA.
The visiting team’s only victory came in the first doubles match. Shaw resurfaced to win the final two doubles matches 8 – 5 and 8 – 2.

Freshman phenomenon Alejandro Ordonez (5 – 7 / 140 / Lima, Peru / Business Management) finished with the only individual shutout as he won the sixth single 6 – 0, 6 – 2. However, the “clash on the clay” of the competition occurred in the second singles with Shaw’s sophomore Milos Stankovic (5 – 10 / 158 / Montenegro, Serbia / Business Administration) was paired against JCSU’s Roman Douglas. The titan showdown was the longest match of the evening in which Stankovic won the first set 6 – 2 and then the second 7 – 6 after winning a tiebreaker match 11 – 9.
