GARNER - After last week's defeat to cross-town
rival St. Augustine's, the Shaw football team looked to take the
loss out on the two-time defending CIAA Champion Fayetteville
State Broncos.
Despite getting out to a 14-0 lead, the Broncos came back with
24 unanswered points on their way to a 24-14 defeat of the Bears
at Trojan Stadium.
Shaw (3-2, 1-2) scored both of its touchdowns in the
second quarter, the first on a one-yard run by Dion McIver with 13:49
remaining to take the 7-0 lead. Jermonty Kimbrough then sneaked it in
from one-yard out late in the quarter to give the Bears a 14-0 lead.
The Bears started their next to last drive of the half
from their own 35 with 2:56 remaining. The Bears tried to put the
Broncos away at that point, but three incomplete passes resulted in a
punt. Returner Daryl Bright caught it at his 30 and returned it 20
yards to midfield. Fayetteville State (3-2, 1-1) went 50 yards in four
plays, aided by a personal foul penalty against the Bears and scored on a
Jonathan Autry 10 yard touchdown run to cut its deficit to 14-7 at halftime.
Both defenses held until Autry found Barry McCauley on a
slant for a 55-yard pass and catch, tying the game at 14.
Both defenses continued to play strong, but the
Bronco ground game, led by Nick Green (27 car., 125 yards) wore on the Bear
defense, as he rushed for 26 yards on the game-winning drive which setup
Ross McKernan's 38-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining.
The Bear defense was led by Christopher Peavy, who
recorded 16 tackles (seven solo). Shaw will host Bowie State next
Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at John Baker Stadium.
