Special Edition of the Pre-Season Diary: The Road to the CIAA Championship and Beyond
So it's 8:19 a.m. right now and I had to get up and write.  I started watching the tape of the game last, but fell asleep and finished watching it this morning.  Let me first say this: CIAA Football has come a long way.  Did you know the game, which was produced by Urban Sports, was carried by ESPN Plus?  ESPN Plus.  That means anyone who has the college football package could have seen the game, even if the game was not broadcast in your area.  Wow!!!  Shaw football on ESPN.  With the young talent the Bears have and the direction that the program is going in, having won the CIAA Championship in just three years, Shaw Football is the future of CIAA football.  Entry 6

We are the Champions!!!!!!
DURHAM – The year was 1947.  That was the last year the Shaw Bears won a CIAA football Championship.  On the other hand, Fayetteville State has been the dominant team in the league the last two years, winning back-to-back championships.

The Bears nation-leading defense held the Broncos to 192 yards of total offense, leading Shaw to a 10-7 victory before a crowd of 8,468 at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.  Read more

And then there was one.  After 57 years the Shaw Bears are Football Champions of the CIAA.  And remember, this is a third-year program.  The Bear defense was once again outstanding.  And special teams played a big part in this game as well.  Devin Chatman with the blocked punt, returning it for the touchdown.  Chester Charles's 21-yard field goal, which turned out to be the game-winner.  Torrance Nunnally with the blocked field goal attempt by the Broncos with 5:05 remaining to help seal the victory.  The Bears are riding high.  Entry 5

Shaw Defeats Kentucky State; will face Fayetteville State in CIAA Championship
The talk coming into the Shaw vs. Kentucky State match-up was that the CIAA conference could not defeat the SIAC.  After all the CIAA had lost all of its match-ups to the SIAC this season.

The Eastern Division champion Bears did not believe the hype as they amassed 455 yards of total offense on their way to a 34-28 victory over the Thorobreds in the first-ever meeting between the two schools at John Baker Stadium.  More importantly, the win enhances the national playoff chances of the Bears, ranked 10th in the southeast region poll, and gives the Bears five-straight victories for the first time since they started the 1958 season 5-0.  It also gives them momentum going into the CIAA Championship game against Fayetteville State, who defeated Livingstone 63-19, next week at 1:00 p.m. in Durham, NC.  Read more

Special Edition of the Pre-Season Diary: The Road to the CIAA Championship and Beyond
The Bears did something today that no other CIAA school has done this year.  They beat an SIAC team.

Prior to the season, I said that playing Kentucky State would be the toughest opponent that Shaw has played in the three years of football.  While the Thorobreds gave a valiant effort and only lost 34-28, the game was not that close.  To me it speaks volumes and shows where this football program really is.  Entry 4

Pre-Season Diary: Final Entry
It's game day!!!  It has again been a super busy week trying to make sure everything is in place.  The team is ready to go.  And I know at the games there will be a lot of fans at the game from the Charlotte, Salisbury and Triad areas.  This has been nine months in the making.  From the day last season ended (Nov. 8, 2003 a 50-15 beating of Webber International) the players and coaches have been working hard to get to this point.  From spring ball to yesterday's last practice leading up to today, what will take place at 6:00 p.m. is what it's all about.

I hope you all have enjoyed this diary.  If you can't make it to Livingstone today at for the game join us on the Shaw Bear Sports Radio Network for all the live action beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30 p.m. or click on the BEAR RADIO logo at the top right of this page.  Thank you for reading and GO BEARS!!

I apologize for leaving you all hanging yesterday.  I was over at WSHA making sure all the equipment is working and recording spots for the broadcast Saturday.  I went out to practice yesterday but not today as my son Blake had his own practice today.  My wife was telling me that he looked good in practice on Tuesday.  He was hitting people out there!  That was certainly a change from when he played three years ago when he wouldn't tackle anybody.  But he did look good in drills.  On one drill he would be the running back, there was a blocker in front of him and a defender trying to get around the blocker.  There was also a player free, who was unblocked in the backfield, also waiting to tackle him.  Read more

Today was the 2004 Shaw Football Kickoff Luncheon held at O'Charley's in Garner on Highway 401.  It went very well.  All the media was there and O'Charley's was a very gracious host.  President Newsome was there as was executive vice-president Martel Perry and special assistant to the president Dr. Claud Flythe and director of athletics Al Carter.  Coach Clark fielded a bunch of questions from the media and was funny and witty at times with some of his responses.  The interview session lasted a good 20 minutes.  Read more
