The CIAA announced its All-Conference first and
second football teams today and five Shaw players were named to those
teams. Cornerback Shawn Woodard, running back Byron Cary and center
Robert Rhodes were named to the first team, while defensive tackle Walif
Campbell and punter William Sanders were named to the second team.
Jermonty Kimbrough was named CIAA Rookie of the Year.
Woodard, a sophomore from Rock Hill, SC,
had an outstanding season, leading the nation in interceptions (13) and passes
defended (23). He had two games where he recorded four interceptions and
returned two interceptions for touchdowns. He was also named
D2Football.com and Don Hansen's National Player of the Week twice and
CIAA Player of the Week three times.
Cary, a freshman from Havelock, NC, was
the conferences second leading rusher carrying the ball 177 times for 914 yards
and 11 touchdowns. In his first collegiate game he carried the ball 31
times for 215 yards and three touchdowns. He rushed for 200 yards twice
this season.
Rhodes, a junior from Los Angeles, CA was
named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week three times this season.
Campbell, a junior from Newark, NJ, is
tied for sixth in the nation in tackles for loss (2.0 per game) and is tied for
the team lead in tackles (51). Sanders, a junior from Clayton, NC was
second in the CIAA in punt average (37.8).
Kimbrough had an outstanding freshman
season for the Bears. The Mobile, AL native led the CIAA in total offense
(259.6) and is ranked 22nd in that category. He is one of only two
quarterbacks in Division II to have passed for over 2,000 yards (2079) and
rushed for over 500 (517). He was named D2Football.com's National
Offensive Player of the Week once this season and CIAA Player of the Week
twice.
Those making the All-Rookie team were
wide receiver Mark Bransom, Cary, Kimbrough, offensive tackle Courtney Safford,
linebacker Ralph Davis, defensive lineman Jacques Lewis, free safety Torrance
Nunnally, defensive back Khaleel Sutherland and linebacker Aaron Woodard.
