January 15, 2008Washington, DCThe Pigskin Club of Washington, DC has selected Shaw University Football’s Head Coach Darrell Asberry as their 2007 CIAA Coach of the Year and  Louis Ellis (#92 / Defensive Lineman / Junior / Recreation / Jackson, MS) has been chosen as the 2007 CIAA Player of the Year. 

Following an amazing season, Asberry will receive the Henry “Stud” Greene Award and Ellis will receive the James Guy “Pete” Tyson Awards at the 70th Annual Awards Dinner on Friday, January 18, 2007 in Washington, DC at the Capital Hilton Hotel.  At the black tie affair, the recipient’s names will be added to a prestigious class of many athletic trailblazers. 

Founded in 1938 by Dr. Charles B. Fisher, the Pigskin Club is one of the oldest sports organizations in the United States.  For seventy years, they have recognized and honored student athletes and coaches from all levels of competition and outstanding individuals that have made significant contributions in the business and civic arenas. 

After successfully piloting the Bears to win the 2007 CIAA Championship, which is the University’s second accomplished feat since the return of the football program in 2004, second year Head Coach Asberry led the Bears to make school history as their season was extended with post season play after being given an invitation to play in the 2007 NCAA Division II Championship Playoffs. In addition, stellar standout Louis Ellis received the 2007 CIAA Defensive Player of the Year.
