FOUR BEARS ON ALL-CIAA
ROOKIE TEAM
November 5, 2007
–
Hampton, VA
– The Central
Intercollegiate Athletic
Association has
announced its 2007 All-CIAA
Rookie Team. Shaw
University has three
student-athletes that
have earned positions on
the All-CIAA Rookie Team
Offense and one
student-athlete on the
All-CIAA Rookie Team
Defense.
The Shaw University
Bears’ representatives
that were selected to
the All-CIAA Rookie Team
Offense were
Markus McElveen (#60 /
Offensive Lineman /
Freshman / Recreation /
Norwalk, CT), Raymond
Williams (#20 / Tailback
/ Freshman / Business
Management / Cleveland,
OH), and Mike Brown (#5
/ Wide Receiver /
Freshman / Athletic
Training / Charlotte,
NC). Shaw’s
solo standout on the
All-CIAA Rookie Team
Defense was
Martellus Braxton (#90 /
Outside Linebacker /
Freshman / Recreation /
Lynchburg, VA).
Markus McElveen
is certainly a
distinguished member of
Shaw’s productive and
protective offensive
line. The Norwalk High
School graduate has
helped the Bears to
accumulate 3,041 yards
in total offense (1,372
rushing yards and 1,669
passing yards – 304.1
average yards per game)
on 640 plays for 165
first downs, 26
touchdowns (14 rushing,
12 passing), and 218
points scoring (21.8
points per game). In the
CIAA, the Bears are
ranked 4th in
scoring offense average
per game (21.8), 3rd
in passing yards per
game (166.9), 6th
in rushing yards per
game (137.2), and 4th
in total offensive yards
per game (304.1).
Raymond Williams
is the freshman
sensation that makes up
half of Shaw’s powerful
and prominent one-two
punch in the backfield.
In 10 games, the Toledo
High School graduate is
ranked 2nd on
the team with 475 yards
(47.5 yards per game) on
126 attempts for an
average of 3.8 yards per
game and three
touchdowns (with a
longest rush of 39
yards). Furthermore, he
has recorded seven
receptions for 79 yards
(7.9 yards per game,
11.3 yards per catch)
with his longest being a
catch of 33 yards per
game. Williams’ had a
season, game, and team
high 177 rushing yards
against Johnson C. Smith
University when the
Bears beat the Golden
Bulls, 45 – 21. In the
CIAA, Williams is ranked
10th in
rushing yards per game
(47.5).
Mike Brown
is considered one of
Shaw’s most integral
threats on their
receiving core. The
Olympic High School
graduate played in eight
games in which he caught
27 receptions for 300
total yards (37.5 yards
per game, 11.1 yards per
catch) for two
touchdowns. Brown’s
longest pass reception
was of 38 yards. In the
CIAA, Brown is ranked 4th
in pass receptions per
game (3.38) and 9th
in receiving yards per
game (37.5).
Martellus Braxton
is remarkably the only
freshman starting on
Shaw’s #1 Nation Ranked
Defense. Braxton is a
graduate of Brookville
High School and has
aided in the Bears
allowing a season
average 1,719 total
yards on offense (171.9
yards per game) and only
115 points total on the
season (11.5 points per
game). In 10 games,
Braxton had 23 total
tackles (10 solo, 13
assisted – four for 25
yards loss), three and a
half sacks for 23 yards
loss, four pass break
ups and one forced
fumble. At the end of
week eight, the CIAA
named Braxton as its
Rookie of the Week. As
Shaw defeated
Livingstone 35 – 7,
Braxton helped the Bears
hold the Blue Bears to
accumulate less than 50
yards in total offense.
He had four total
tackles (two solo, two
assists 1.5 for 15 yards
lost) and two sacks for
14 yards lost. He helped
to hold Livingstone in a
shutout of the second
and fourth
quarters.
