NEW SU HEAD FOOTBALL COACH ANNOUNCES STAFF
Raleigh,
NC – (July
18, 2006) Darrell Asberry, 1st
year Head Football Coach at Shaw University
recently announced the appointment of his
staff for the upcoming 2006 season.
Remaining with the program from last year is
Wayne McLean (Running Backs). The new
appointments include Perez Boulware
(Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers); Derrick
McCall (Offensive Coordinator/Wide
Receivers); Rich McGeorge (Assistant Head
Coach/Offensive Line); Quincy Pedew (Tight
Ends), and
Dearrion
Snead (Defensive Backs).
On the job for just a little over two weeks,
Asberry is really excited with the time
table taken in putting together his staff.
He said, “At this point I am real pleased
because I was able to put together a quality
staff of experienced and proven coaches.”
2006
SU Football Staff:
Perez
Boulware – Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
Boulware
brings nine years of collegiate coaching to
Shaw University; the last seven hailing from
North Carolina Central University. From
1999-2002, he coached linebackers under Head
Coach Rudy Abrams and was retained by Head
Coach Rod Broadway at NCCU. During those
four seasons, a linebacker led the team in
tackles three times. In 2003, he coached
the defensive line and returned to the
linebacker position coach in 2004. A native
of Thomasville, NC, Boulware played two
seasons (1993-94) as inside linebacker at
the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill before his football career was
shortened by the discovery of a spinal cord
abnormality. He remained on the sideline as
a student coach for two seasons under former
Coach Carl Tarbush, working with linebackers
and defensive linemen. He is a 1997
graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A.
degree in Organizational Communication and
he started his coaching career in 1997 at
Livingstone College as Linebackers Coach.
He served two seasons (1997-98) and the Blue
Bears won the CIAA Championship both
seasons.
Derrick
McCall – Offensive Coordinator/Receivers
Coach
McCall
joins the Bears after a four year stint at
Tuskegee University as their Receivers
Coach. He brings a wealth of knowledge and
experience, along with a definite winning
background. He had a successful collegiate
career as a player at Jackson State
University (1979-83) leading them to two
SWAC Championships and two NCAA Division
I-AA playoff berths. The Prichard, AL
native was a three year starter at
quarterback (1976-79), leading them to their
first winning season in 10 years with an 8-3
record. He was named the Alabama 6A Player
of the Year and started at QB for the South
in the 1979 Alabama All-Star Football Game.
From 1985-1987, McCall coached the
quarterbacks for the Miami Suns semi-pro
football team. The following two seasons
(1988-89), he coached the quarterbacks at
Edison High School’s junior varsity in
Miami, FL. He had a one year stint
(1990-91) as baseball coach for the 14-year
old division at the Shoal Creek Park and
Recreation in Decatur, GA. The next five
years (1991-96), he served as the head
football coach and offensive coordinator at
the Decatur, GA’s Exchange Park and
Recreation Center, amassing a 29-10 record.
McCall served on the staff at Shaw High
School (Mobile, AL/1996-97) and the staff of
the Mobile Seagulls indoor professional
football team (1999-2000). He returned to
Blount High (1997-2000) and served as the
assistant head coach and offensive
coordinator and helped them win the Alabama
5A State Championship three consecutive
years (1998-2000). McCall is married to
the former Constance Wright, a native of
Tuskegee, AL and they are the proud parents
of five daughters and one son; Tiffany,
Tanesha, India, Laquice, Courtney and
Brandon.
Rich McGeorge
– Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line
McGeorge
brings over 20 years of collegiate and
professional football coaching experience to
the SU program. He comes to SU after a two
year stint at NCCU as Offensive Line Coach.
In his first season with the Eagles, the
front line provided protection for the
top-rated quarterback in the CIAA and paved
the way for an 1,100 yard rusher. He also
produced NCAA Division II All-American
Ricardo Phillips. Prior to NCCU, he served
a third stint as a Duke University assistant
coach, serving as the running game
coordinator and offensive line coach during
the 2002-03 seasons.
McGeorge got
his start in coaching at Duke, coaching
tight ends during the 1981 and 1982
seasons. He then spent two years on the
staff of the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions
before serving as the offensive coordinator
of the Tampa Bay Bandits under Head Coach
Steve Spurrier in 1985. He returned to Duke
with Spurrier to coach the offensive line
for three seasons (1987-89) as the Blue
Devils captured the 1989 ACC Championship.
He then spent three seasons as the offensive
line coach at Florida (1990-92), helping the
Gators to an SEC Championship (1991) and two
bowl game appearances (1991 Sugar & 1992
Gator). McGeorge returned to the
professional ranks in 1993 to begin a seven
year stint with the NFL’s Miami Dolphins,
coaching tight ends and offensive line from
1993-99. During his tenure in Miami, the
Dolphins won one AFC Eastern Division title
(1994) and made five trips to the playoffs.
After coaching stops with the Tampa Bay
Storm of the Arena Football League and the
Green Bay Packers in 2000, he spent 2001 as
the assistant head coach and offensive
coordinator of the Memphis franchise of the
XFL, helping the Maniax lead the league in
total offense. A native of Roanoke, VA,
McGeorge was a two-time first team
All-America pick at Elon College in 1968 and
1969. He was a first round draft pick by
the Green Bay Packers in 1970 and played
nine seasons with them (1970-78), totaling
175 career pass receptions for 2,370 yards
and 13 touchdowns. He was the Packers’ 1973
Offensive Player of the Year, and was
inducted into the Elon University (1979) and
NAIA (1980) Hall of Fame. McGeorge earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and
Physical Education from Elon in 1971. He is
married to the former Bonnie Moore and they
are the proud parents of two sons, Randy and
Jason.
Wayne McLean
– Running Backs
McLean
has been a part of the SU football staff
since the program was reinstated in 2002.
He served as Assistant Head Coach (2003-05)
under former Head Coach Deondri Clark and
was the Running Backs Coach from 2002 –
present. Under his guidance, he has
produced three 1,000 yard rushers and two
first team All-CIAA running backs that have
helped the program successfully with the
Bears impressive 29-13 win-loss mark since
2002. He served as head junior varsity
coach at Harnett Central High (1996-99) and
Defensive End Coach at Washington High in
Pensacola, FL (1992). The Lillington, NC
native was a three year letterman at N.C.
State (1978-80) and played professional ball
for the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL (1983)
and the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the
Canadian Football League (1980-81).
Quincy Pedew
– Tight Ends
Pedew joins
the SU staff after a two year stint at NCCU
as Tight Ends Coach. In 2004 he served as a
Grad Assistant on the Eagle staff. He
enjoyed a successful collegiate career
playing both sides of the ball at NCCU.
Pedew was a defensive lineman his first two
seasons then switched to tight end, where he
caught six passes for 55 yards as a senior
in 2003. Prior to NCCU, he earned
all-conference and all county football
honors in 1999 as a senior at A.L. Brown
High School in Kannapolis, NC. His squad
won the state championship in 1997. Pedew
is a 2005 graduate of N.C. Central
University.
Dearrion
Snead – Defensive Backs
Snead
brings 15 years of coaching experience to
the SU staff. He spent the past season as
Assistant Head Coach and Defensive
Coordinator at Guilford College which posted
its best record since 1997. Guilford
finished 1st in red zone defense
while also creating 24 turnovers. The team
tied for second place (4-2) in the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference. Prior to
joining the Guilford staff he spent two
seasons helping Arizona Western Junior
College to a 7-4 record each year. From
2001-02 he coached the defensive line and
outside linebackers for Texas Southern and
was Virginia State’s defensive coordinator
in 2000. Snead’s defense at Southwest (MN)
State ranked 12th among NCAA Division II
total defense leaders in 1999 and led the
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. In
1998, Snead coached the secondary and
special teams at Tiffin where the Dragons
tied a school record with 20 interceptions.
Each member of the secondary received
All-Mid-States Football Association honors
and cornerback Wesley Russell was a First
Team NAIA All-American. Snead also made
coaching stops at Tennessee State and East
Stroudsburg. A member of the Longwood (NY)
High School Athletics Hall of Fame, he is a
1996 graduate of St. Joseph’s in Long
Island. He began his college career at
North Carolina A&T State University, where
he played varsity football. The Virginia
native spent four years as a
non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine
Corps. As a Marine, he received the Kuwait
Liberation Medal, the National Defense
Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal and was
named to the All-Marine Football Team.
