SPECIAL TEAMS MISCUES HELP CARSON-NEWMAN TO A 41-7 WIN

– A blocked punt and a 80 yard kick-off return set the tone as the Shaw University Bears were defeated by the national ranked (#8) Eagles of Carson-Newman College 41-7.

CNC finished the afternoon with 183 returned yards that included a 12 yard blocked punt return that started the scoring for the game in the first quarter.  Also included in those yards was an 80 yard kickoff return that opened the second half of play.

The Bears were held to 56 yards on the ground and 124 yards in the air, while the Eagles managed 209 on the ground and 99 in the air.

After giving up 34 unanswered points, SU finally got on the board at the 10:56 mark of the third period when Chris Williams (6’3, 220-SO, RB/Jacksonville, NC) scored on a four yard run, which finished a seven play 77 yard drive.  On the drive, senior QB, Jermonty Kimbrough (5’11, 186, SR/Mobile, AL) completed a 23 yard pass to Robbie Henson (6’2, 190-SR/Tracy, CA) and a 31 yard strike to Theron Wigfall (6’5, 200-SO/ Jacksonville, NC) that set up the score.

Pacing the Bears defensively was Terrence Ford (5’11, 205-SR/Clewiston, FL) and Chad Green (6’5, 240-SO, DE/Nashville, NC) who finished with 11 tackles each.  Eric Raines (5’10, 178-FR, CB/Valrico, FL) got his first career interception and also finished with four tackles and one pass breakup.

The Bears will return to action Saturday (September 16) in Jacksonville, FL against non-conference rival Edward Waters College.
