Shaw Handles Johnson C. Smith

Now that's what offense is all about.

Shaw amassed 456 yards of total offense, led by Dion McIver's 186 yards rushing as Shaw defeated Johnson C. Smith 49-14 before a crowd of 3,002 at John Baker Stadium.

Johnson C. Smith (0-2, 0-1) received the ball first and in five plays moved the ball to the Shaw 25.  On 2nd and 10 Bernard Hawk's pass was intercepted by All-American cornerback Shawn Woodard who returned 83 yards for a touchdown as the Bears took a 7-0 lead.  The Golden Bulls tied the score at 7-7 with an 18-play, 77 yard drive capped of by a Donja Goodson to Marquis Belton three-yard touchdown pass and catch.

But that would be as close as the Golden Bulls would come as Dion McIver's one-yard touchdown run and Damon Harrison's 52-yard touchdown reception from Jermonty Kimbrough put the Bears up 21-7 at halftime.

Shaw (2-0, 1-0) continued to pour it on in the second half, as McIver got his second and third touchdown runs of the game, the first from six yards out and the second from nine yards out, both in the third quarter.

The Bear defense only allowed Johnson C. Smith 76 yards rushing and no rushing touchdowns, extending its streak to 30 quarters without allowing a rushing touchdown.  For the second-straight week Christopher Peavy led the Bears in tackles (11), had a sack and recovered a fumble.  A.J. McDonald had six tackles, two for loss, while Woodard finished with two interceptions and four passes defended.

The combination of Hawk and Goodson combined to go 13-of-25 for 146 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions.  Derek Boston led the Golden Bulls in rushing with 46 yards and Chris Nelson led the Golden Bulls defensively with 11 tackles.

Shaw will face Edward Water next Saturday in the third annual Willie E. Gary Classic in Jacksonville, FL in Alltel Stadium at 5:00 p.m.  Meanwhile, the Golden Bulls will play at Georgia Southern next Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Note: During pre-game, President Clarence Newsome along with the Shaw band and director Charles Brown was presented a check by Honda Battle of the Bands for $1,000.00.
