Shaw Picked to Finish Second in the East

The Shaw football team has been picked to finish second in the CIAA's Eastern Division as selected by the conference football coaches association at the annual football coaches luncheon in Jones Dining Hall on the campus of Virginia State.  Shaw, who was picked to finish fifth out of the five teams in the eastern division last year, finished last season with a 7-3 overall mark and third in the east with a 4-3 record. 

Meanwhile, cornerback Shawn Woodard, center Robert Rhodes and running back Byron Cary have been named to the pre-season All-CIAA team.  Woodard (6-0, 180, Jr.) a native of Rock Hill, SC led the nation in interceptions (1.6), recording 13 and passes defended (3.0), recording 24.  Twice last season he recorded four interceptions in a game (9/27, 11/8), was named CIAA Player of the Week three times and was named first team All-CIAA in addition to being named All-American.


Cary (5-10, 190, So.), a native of Havelock, NC, was second in the CIAA in rushing (91.4) and scoring (8.2).  He carried the ball 31 times for 215 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate game against Livingstone (8/31).  He had two games where he rushed for over 200 yards last season and was named CIAA Player of the Week three times and was named first team All-CIAA.

Rhodes, (6-3, 320, Sr.), a native of Los Angeles, CA and one of the top linemen in the country, was named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week three times last year, first team All-CIAA and helped Shaw lead the CIAA in total offense (404.6), which also ranked 32nd in the nation.
