Defense Defeats Offense in Shaw Spring Game

The Shaw football team, coming of a 7-3 in its inaugural season in 25 years completed spring practice today with the annual spring game.  The defense defeated the offense 41-35 based upon Shaw spring football game scoring system.

The first team offense, led by 2003 CIAA Rookie of the Year quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough scored on its opening possession.  The drive began auspiciously enough as the offense was called for a false start on the very first play of the game.  Kimbrough then went to work, completing 5-of-6 passes for 60 yards on the drive and capped off the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Damon Harrison.  Kimbrough finished the game 9-of-15 for 159 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions.  Harrison had four catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns for the game.  All-CIAA running back Byron Cary finished with eight carries for 33 yards.

The first team defense was dominant against the second team offense, forcing them to go three-and-out on their first five possessions.  Quarterback Courtland Rush was under duress often as he was sacked four times on the day, two by defensive end Jamison Collins, who finished the game with five tackles, three for loss and two quarterback hurries.  Newcomer A.J. McDonald was impressive recording six tackles, five for loss.  All-Rookie performer free safety Torrance Nunnally had seven tackles one interception and two passes defended and linebacker Christopher Peavy had seven tackles as well.

Rush received better protection as the game went on and began to settle down in the seventh series, completing a 20-yard pass to wide receiver Anthony Frost.  On a fourth and two play, Rush gained 15 yards, keeping the drive alive, before throwing an interception to Bryan Cumberlander.  Running back Reginald Price carried the load and had some nice runs, finishing with 11 carries for 21 yards and running back Dion McIver had five carries for 11 yards.

Note:
The goalline situations were not counted in the final outcome of the game.  Price scored a touchdown and Rush completed a touchdown pass to Phillip Henry.
