Shaw Wins Homecoming; Takes First Place
Charles’s Field Goal Proves to be Difference in Shaw Victory

Steven Miller’s 31-yard field goal sailed right as Shaw held on for the 10-9 victory before a crowd of 4,898 at Trojan Stadium.

Shaw (5-2, 3-2) scored first as Darreous Moody ran off left tackle for a none-yard touchdown run and a 7-0 Shaw lead.  Virginia Union finally scored as Shaw’s punter William Sanders could not handle a snap and it sailed out of the back of the end zone as Shaw’s lead was cut to 7-2 at halftime.

Virginia Union (1-6-, 1-4) scored to open the third quarter as Cordell Roane found Herb Jones for a 16-yard touchdown and a 9-7 Panther lead.

Neither team could get much going until Bear quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough rushed for 12 yards, diving for the first down at the end of the run, to the Panther 18, which kept the Bear drive alive.  The dive set up Chester Charles’s 28-yard field goal, which put the Bears ahead 10-9.

Shaw racked up 249 yards of total offense, while holding Virginia Union to 174 yards.  Shaw will play at Elizabeth City State, whom defeated Bowie State 11-0, next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
