Charles to Study Medicine in Australia
Chester
Charles, a kicker on the Shaw football team, has been selected to
participate in the International Mission on Medicine in Australia from May
15 to 26, 2004
. Charles will join eighty other college and university students from
throughout the United States interested in medical careers for a culturally
enriching experience designed to add to each participant’s personal
knowledge, as well as academic and pre-professional profiles.
Charles will visit the extraordinary cities of
Sydney and Cairns and the distinguished halls of The University of Sydney
School of Medicine and James Cook University. Through observation and
dialogues with medical staff, participants will also gain perspective on how
western doctors administer care to Australia’s many ethnic groups.
“As
students like Chester Charles progress in their studies, it becomes
increasingly important to gain a full perspective on how medicine is practiced
in the United States and abroad,” said John Hines, executive director of
Envision Institute, the organization that sponsors the International Missions.
“The International Mission on Medicine joins the efforts of colleges and
universities in offering experiential education that complements and enhances a
college education.”
The program curriculum will introduce its participants to the
pharmacology of the Aboriginal people and will provide a glimpse into current
medical research being conducted at the Great Barrier Reef.
By focusing on education in which participants learn by doing, Envision
Institute provides the skills and resources needed to succeed in our constantly
changing world and gives its participants the opportunity to gain a tremendous
head start on their career aspirations.
"I ma honored and privileged to be going to Australia," said Charles
a sophomore from Baton Rouge, LA. "It will give me a chance to see
how they fight diseases in Australia."
