Seven members of the Shaw football team were named to the 2004 All-CIAA Football Team. Center senior Robert Rhodes and junior cornerback Shawn Woodard were voted to the first team for the second-straight season. Running back Dion McIver and linebacker Chris Peavy were also named to the first team.
Offensive tackle Courtney Safford, defensive lineman Jerry Shaw and free safety Torrance Nunnally were named to the second team.
Woodard is tied for the team lead in interceptions (4) and leads the team with 14 passes defended and has recorded 26 tackles. The All-American and Rock Hill, SC native led the nation last year with 13 interceptions and teams have been leery of throwing the ball to his side. Rhodes was a pre-season All-American and despite injury has been solid for the Bears at center. McIver is on the verge of becoming the Bears first 1,000-yard rusher. The Lillington, NC native has rushed for 961 yards and eight touchdowns. He is averaging 4.0 yards per carry and leads the conference in carries (239). Peavy is a Harlon Hill Award candidate for the best player in Division II college football. The Syracuse native has recorded 105 tackles, 22 for loss and has six sacks while being named d2football.com's and Don Hansen's National Player of the Week after recording a career high 18 tackles against Kentucky State.
Safford has been named CIAA Offensive Lineman of the Week three times this season. The Augusta, GA native was an All-Rookie selection last year. Shaw is a versatile lineman, who can play either tackle or end and has recorded 16 tackles. Nunnally is an iron man who has started all 30 games of his Bear career. The Danville, VA native and 2003 All-Rookie performer is second on the team in tackles (50) and has recorded four interceptions on the season.
