Men, Women Prepare for Cross Country Championships
Athletic coaches are a vital part of any team. They often begin their careers as players. William Montague, head men and women’s cross country coach for Shaw University’s team, is a good example. Coach Montague has been coaching for the past 27 years therefore, he has the experience of a student-athlete, coach, and a sports consultant. He affirmed that, “Commitment to excellence in whatever you do is key to success in academics, sports, and in life…. To be a successful athlete one needs to have a winning attitude…. One also needs to believe that he/she can win.”  Read more

Shaw Cross Country Gets Ready for Upcoming Season
Shaw University men's cross country team is trying to keep the streak alive. For the past nine seasons they have not finished lower than third place in the CIAA.

This season the Bears will look for sophomore Maurice Styles to lead the pack.  Styles finished 14th in the region last season to earn all-region honors and was a member of the all-conference team.  Junior Jeffrey Jackson and sophomore Charles Simms along with Styles will be the top three runners on the Bears team.  Jackson has been a solid performer for the Bears the last two seasons.  Last year he was injured for most of the season. Simms did not compete last season at a 100 percent due to illness, but is healthy and ready to roll this season.

The difference between this year's team and last years team is depth. With the loss of four solid runners the Bears will look for senior Lloyd Knight,  junior Demetruis Hart , newcomers Jamel Mack, Pierre Lassiter, and Kevin Cook  to fill that void.

The Bears open up the season on Saturday at the Cross Town Classic which will held at Duke Forest Park.
