Ricky
Williams led Shaw with 20 points as Shaw defeated Winston-Salem State 70-61
before a full capacity crowd at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Winston-Salem State (12-4, 3-3) got behind Audly Wehner early as he scored the
Rams first eight points en route to the Rams taking a 8-6 lead with 14 minutes
20 seconds remaining in the first half. Shaw took the lead on two
Williams free throws with 12:42 remaining in the half, but then found itself in
familiar territory. Anthony Greenup (13 points, 10 rebounds) was his
usual dominant self in the first half scoring nine points on 4-of-7 shooting
and grabbing nine rebounds, but the rest of the Bears went 4-of-24 and the
Bears found themselves down 24-20 at halftime.
The
second half was a seesaw affair as the teams traded baskets. Williams'
three-pointer at the 13:44 mark of the second gave the Bears a 36-34
lead. Jay Maynard came right back and untied the score, matching
Williams' three-pointer and the Rams were ahead again 37-36 with 13 minutes to
play. A lay-up by Darius Acuff (10 points) with 12 minutes 22 seconds
remaining put Shaw ahead to stay, giving it the lead at 38-37.
Williams
played well in the first half but was only 2-of-7 from the field. He came
to life in the second half hitting 4-of-8 field goals. He also finished
with six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocked shots. The
Bears shot a sizzling 59 percent from the field in the second half and stymied
the Rams with their zone pressure defense. The Bears also hit their free
throws down the stretch, finishing 17-of-25 from the line.
Shaw
will play in the Carolina Freedom Classic tomorrow against St. Augustine's at
9:00 p.m. at the RBC Center.
