Anthony Greenup's 21 points and 13 rebounds were not
enough as Shaw fell to Virginia Union 92-77 at Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Bears (4-4, 7-6, 10-13) hung tough in
the first five minutes of the game and a Cordell Maxwell jumper with 14 minutes
13 seconds remaining in the first half, pulled the Bears to within 10-8.
The Panthers (6-2, 11-3, 17-4) proceeded to go on a 12-0 run capped off by a
Ralph Brown lay-up which put the Panthers up 22-8 with 10:37 remaining in the
first half. Shaw went on a 21-7 run over the next six minutes and Acuff's
(20 points) jumper tied the game at 29 with 4:04 remaining in the half.
But that's as close as the Bears would get and the Panthers led 39-33 at
halftime.
After getting down by as many as 14 the
Bears clawed their way back and cut the Panther lead to 60-53 on a Damon
Harrison jumper with 11:22 remaining. That's as close as the Bears would
get as Virginia Union's lead would increase to 21 points before the final
buzzer.
The Panthers had five players over or
near 20 points, led by Ralph Brown's 21.
Shaw will host Johnson C. Smith on
Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Spaulding Gymnasium.
