Tampa, FL – Shaw junior guard Daniel
Jackson played an inspired game, scoring a team-high 15 points and 14 rebounds
but it wasn’t enough as Shaw fell to Tampa 61-52 at Bob Martinez Sports
Center.
Shaw (0-3) was down 24-15 with seven minutes, 29 second remaining in the first
half and cut it to 27-23 on two free throws by John Kornegay with 2:37
remaining in the half. The Bears
had numerous opportunities to get closer or perhaps take the lead, but could
not capitalize on three Spartan turnovers and Mark Borders’s three-pointer as
time expired to end the first half gave the Spartans a 30-23 halftime lead.
Down 33-26, Shaw scored five unanswered
points to pull to within 33-31 on a lay-up by Jackson with 16:13 remaining.
Shaw, with a chance to tie or go ahead, forced another Spartan turnover,
but could not capitalize and a mini 6-0 run by Tampa put the Spartans up 39-31
with 13:58 remaining. Tampa (3-0) extended its lead to 52-38 on a Borders
three-pointer with 7:48 remaining. Although
the Bears forced Tampa into 19 turnovers, they committed 18 themselves and made
only four field goals the last eight minutes and 32 seconds of the game.
Borders
led all scorers with 21 points. Shaw
‘s James Rosebud chipped in 13 points. Shaw’s
next game will be November 30 when it hosts Presbyterian at 7:30 p.m. in C.C.
Spaulding Gymnasium.
