Anytime
Shaw and St. Augustine's get together to compete in any sport, it's going to be
competitive. What made this men's basketball game between the Bears and
the Falcons even more interesting was that fact that it was the last game of a
tripleheader in the Carolina Freedom Classic.
Carlos
Gill's putback off a Damien Daniel missed free throw put Falcons ahead 69-68
with 8.2 seconds remaining in the half. Shaw's Michael McLeod raced to
get the ball up court, made some great moves to get to the basket took a shot
which was missed. He then fell to the floor hard with no foul call
and the Bears were not able to come away with the rebound as time expired and
the Falcon players came running to half court in jubilation as the crowd of
5,103 at RBC Center looked on.
It was another classic thriller between the Bears and the Falcons. St
Augustine's (12-4, 5-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on a lay-up by Desmond Peoples
at the 18:11 mark of the first half. Shaw would take the lead on a dunk
by Anthony Greenup (18 points, 12 rebounds) with 10 minutes nine seconds
remaining in the first half. Shaw took its biggest lead of the half at
32-26 on a free throw by Darius Acuff (11 points) with 4:45 remaining in the
first. The Falcons regained the lead 33-32 on a three-pointer by Marcus
Lane, completing a 7-0 run over a 1:49 stretch. The Bears would regain
the lead, led by Acuff who controlled the Bear tempo scoring eight points and
dishing out five assists en route to the Bears shooting a sizzling 54 percent
in the first half and taking a 41-37 halftime lead.
Shaw
(5-11, 2-4) held the biggest lead of the game, 61-52 on a lay-up by Acuff with
9 minutes 20 seconds remaining. The Bears would go scoreless for the next
3:25 and St. Augustine's would take the lead 62-61 on a free throw by Jay
Chapman with 6:12 remaining. The bears would not make a field goal for
nearly eight minutes before Ricky Williams' three-pointer with 1:35 remaining
brought Shaw to within 66-65. As the Falcons tried to run time off the
clock, Cordell Maxwell came up with a steal and McLeod hit an off-balanced
acrobatic lay-up with 22 seconds remaining as he was fouled. His made
free throw gave the Bears the 68-66 lead. A foul by Williams with 8.2
seconds remaining sent Daniels to the line. He made the first one setting
up the game-winning shot.
In
addition to Acuff's 11 points he nearly had a triple-double with eight assists
and eight rebounds. Greenup was 9-of-10 from the field and also had four
dunks. Desmond Peoples finished with a game-high 26 points for St.
Augustine's.
