Anthony Greenup scored a game-high 23
points but it wasn’t enough as Shaw fell to North Carolina Central 66-61
before a sellout crowd at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (4-8, 1-1) led by 32-25 on a tip-in by
Greenup with 2:36 remaining in the first half.
The Eagles would rally and pull to within 32-31 on a tip-in by David
Young (19 points) with 58 seconds remaining in the half and trailed 34-31 at
halftime.
Shaw held its biggest lead of the game at
45-34 on a lay-up by Michael McLeod with 14:38 remaining in the game.
But North Carolina Central (6-6, 2-1) would keep it their deficit under
10 points over the next eight minutes. Two
free throws by Cordell Maxwell (22 points) put the Bears ahead 58-53 with 6:28
remaining. The Eagles then went on
a 10-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 63-58 lead with 1:19 remaining.
Maxwell hit a three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining and trailed 63-61.
But Curtis Knight came right back with a lay-up with 34 seconds
remaining to put the Eagles up 65-61. Shaw
made 11-of-22 free throws.
Shaw
will host Bowie State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
