DURHAM - Anthony Greenup scored 19 points as Shaw
squeaked by North Carolina Central 68-64 before a crowd of 1,217 at
McLendon-McDougald Gymnasium. For Shaw it was its first victory of the
season in five tries.
Shaw (1-4) was down 31-18 with 4:17
remaining in the first half as North Carolina Central hit a barrage of
three-pointers. Shaw then went on a 15-1 run to close out the half.
Darius Acuff (11 points) and Ricky Williams (15 points, 13 rebounds) each hit
big three-pointers to bring the Bears back. But it was Greenup's
emphatic, reverse over the shoulder dunk off an alleyoop from Acuff with :04 in
the half that gave the Bears a 33-32 halftime lead. It was one of five dunks
on the night for Greenup.
The Eagles (3-3) continued its barrage of
three's led by James Tucker (19 points), who was 6-of-12 from behind the
arc. North Carolina Central took a 61-53 lead on David Young's (14
points) three-pointer with 5:19 remaining in the second half. But the
Bears would not go away, as they stepped up their defense going on an 11-3 run
and tying the score at 64-64 on a Greenup dunk with 1:12 remaining.
Michael McLeod's two free throws at the :44 mark of the half proved to be the
game-winning points, giving Shaw a 66-64 lead.
Shaw will next bin action out Mount Olive
on December 11 at 7:00 p.m.
