- Shaw got clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, including Anthony
Greenup's two free throws with six seconds remaining to secure a 78-76
victory over Fayetteville State at Capel Arena.
Shaw (7-11, 4-4) took its biggest lead of the game 32-18 on Ricky Williams'
third three-pointer of the first half with 7:39 remaining in the half.
The Bears then went on a scoring drought hitting only four free throws.
The Bears did a solid job defensively, however and led 36-29 at halftime.
Shaw
went up 50-40 on a lay-up be Greenup with 15 minutes 18 seconds remaining in
the second half. Fayetteville State (9-8, 3-5) went on an 18-7 run over
the next 5:18 and took a 58-57 lead on a three-pointer by Tyreece Brown with
9:52 remaining. Michael McLeod (18 points) and Greenup quickly helped
Shaw to regain the lead. Two free throws however by Donell Williams (16
points) gave the Broncos a 70-69 lead with 2:33 remaining. Shaw regained
the lead for good on a Darius Acuff jumper which put Shaw up 71-70 with 2:25
left. A subsequent steal by Acuff and two free throws down the stretch by
Williams sealed the victory for the Bears.
Michael McLeod was unstoppable scoring 14 of his 18 points in the second half,
mostly by beating his man off the dribble for lay-ups. He also dished out
five assists. Greenup
recorded his third-straight double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Ricky Williams, who was 6-of-6 from the free throw
line had 15 points.
Robert
Ford led Fayetteville State with 17 points.
Shaw
will host Livingstone on Saturday ay 7:30 p.m. in Spaulding Gymnasium.
