BOCA RATON, FL – The Shaw men’s
basketball team comes into the 2004-05 season with a brand new team for the
most part. Third year head coach
Michael Bernard was looking to get the season off on the right foot.
Kevin Williams scored 21 points but it was not enough as the Bears fell 75-66
to Florida Tech in the Pepsi/Double Tree Classic hosted by Lynn University.
Shaw (0-1) played tough in the first five minutes of the game as
Williams’ three-pointer with 14 minutes, 26 seconds remaining in the first
half tied the score at 9-9. Florida
Tech (2-0) used an 11-0 run to take a 20-9 lead with 12:04 remaining in the
half. The Panthers extended their
lead to 32-13 on a three-pointer by Desmond Greene with 7:53 remaining in the
half and took a 45-30 halftime lead.
The closest the Bears would come would be
54-50 as Daniel Jackson hit a jumper with 11:16 remaining.
During that 20-9 run, Williams, who finished the game 6-of-12 from
three-point range, hit two three-pointers.
James Rosebud recorded a double-double for
the Bears with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Ryan Maultsby led the Panthers with 23 points.
