BEARS TAKE WEST GEORGIA IMPROVE TO 3-0
Kennesaw, GA - The Shaw University Bears overcame a 15 point
half-time deficit and held off the Braves of West Georgia 75-67 in their first
game of the Kennesaw State Classic. The
Bears will take on North Greenville tomorrow at 4:00pm in their second game of
the Classic, hosted by Kennesaw State University.
West Georgia out rebounded
(20-14) the much taller Bears and also used 14 points off of their turnovers for
a 40-25 halftime lead. In the
second half the Bears held the Braves to 32% shooting from the floor compared to
47% in the first half, and connected on 57% (16-28) of their shots.
The Bears took the lead for good
61-60 when senior All-American candidate Ronald Murray connected on two free
throws with 5:38 left in the game. It
was Murray again, scoring the Bears next five points on a three pointer and a
lay up, extending their lead to six 66-60 with 4:09 left.
The Braves Chezley Watson cut the lead to three and a put back by Dennis
Long kept them in striking distance 66-65 with 3:35 left. With both teams
working the clock, it was J.R. Raymond’s three pointer with 40 seconds left
that gave the Bears breathing room 69-65.
The Bears had four players in
double figures, led by Ronald Murray with 25 points, J.R. Raymond 14, Cedric
Lusk 13 and Steve Bynes 12.
In
the second game of the Classic, Kennesaw State defeated North Greenville 86-73.
The host Owls will meet West Georgia tomorrow in the second game.
