Shaw
fought hard in the second half to trim a 20-point deficit to three, but fell to
eighth-ranked Bowie State 82-75 at Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (8-16, 6-7, 4-4) got down by as much as 16 points in the first half and
trailed 48-35 at halftime. In the
second half Bowie State (20-3, 11-2, 7-0) went took it biggest lead of the game
59-39 on a jumper by Isaiah Johnson with 16 minutes 20 seconds remaining in the
second half. After a bit of a
scuffle between both teams, which netted no technical fouls, the incident
seemed to spark the Bears.
The
Bears went on a 15-0 run over the next five minutes and cut the deficit to
59-54 on a jumper by John Kornegay with 11:39 remaining.
The Bears had a chance to cut it to three or two but turned it over and
Letheal Cook’s tip-in at the 10:33 mark extended the Bowie State lead to
61-54. Bowie State then extended
its lead to nine points 66-57 on a jumper by Kevin Bell with 8:42 remaining.
But
the Bears would hang tough not letting the lead get to double digits and coming
as close as three points, 69-66 on a lay-up by Kornegay with 6:28 remaining.
Shaw had one more chance down 77-73 but missed a shot with 1:01
remaining and was forced to foul the rest of the game. Bowie
State made four-of six free throws down the stretch.
Kevin
Bell led Bowie State with 27 points and Cook added 15.
James Rosebud led the Bears with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Daniel
Jackson had 16 points and 10 rebounds
Shaw will travel to Richmond, VA on Tuesday to
take on Virginia Union at the Siegel Center on the campus of VCU.
