Shaw fought hard in the second half to trim a 20-point deficit to three, but fell to eighth-ranked Bowie State 82-75 at Spaulding Gymnasium.

Shaw (8-16, 6-7, 4-4) got down by as much as 16 points in the first half and trailed 48-35 at halftime.  In the second half Bowie State (20-3, 11-2, 7-0) went took it biggest lead of the game 59-39 on a jumper by Isaiah Johnson with 16 minutes 20 seconds remaining in the second half.  After a bit of a scuffle between both teams, which netted no technical fouls, the incident seemed to spark the Bears.

The Bears went on a 15-0 run over the next five minutes and cut the deficit to 59-54 on a jumper by John Kornegay with 11:39 remaining.  The Bears had a chance to cut it to three or two but turned it over and Letheal Cook’s tip-in at the 10:33 mark extended the Bowie State lead to 61-54.  Bowie State then extended its lead to nine points 66-57 on a jumper by Kevin Bell with 8:42 remaining.

But the Bears would hang tough not letting the lead get to double digits and coming as close as three points, 69-66 on a lay-up by Kornegay with 6:28 remaining.  Shaw had one more chance down 77-73 but missed a shot with 1:01 remaining and was forced to foul the rest of the game.  Bowie State made four-of six free throws down the stretch.

Kevin Bell led Bowie State with 27 points and Cook added 15.  James Rosebud led the Bears with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Daniel Jackson had 16 points and 10 rebounds

Shaw will travel to Richmond, VA on Tuesday to take on Virginia Union at the Siegel Center on the campus of VCU.
