Robert Brickey, former basketball player at Duke University, has been named head basketball coach of Shaw University, it was announced today by Shaw University President Clarence G. Newsome. He replaces Michael Bernard who resigned to pursue other employment opportunities. 

Brickey was introduced by Dr. Newsome at a media conference today at 1 p.m.

Brickey, a native of Fayetteville, most recently was an assistant coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Prior to that, Brickey was an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Brickey played four years at Duke from the 1986-87 season through the 1989-90 season. He served as team captain in 1990 and received first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament honors in 1988. He was a member of three Final Four teams and started in the national championship game in 1990.

Known for his athleticism, Brickey had a brief stint with the Global Basketball Association’s Raleigh Bullfrogs in the early 1990s.

“I am an educator first. I like to keep things simple one of my first goals is to lead young men to live successful lives, to graduate,” said, Brickey. He also said in an interview that he is committed to the vision of Dr. Newsome who is proactive in building a strong athletic program. “We’ve gotta be able to win, recruit players and Coach K [Krzyzewski] was one person who felt I could get it done,” said Brickey.

He received his bachelor of arts degree in political science from Duke University.

"We are indeed very fortunate to attract someone of Robert Brickey’s caliber to Shaw,” stated Dr. Newsome. “He has excellent credentials, but more importantly, he has a love for the students and believes in molding athletes who can be leaders in our society.”

Mike Krzyzewski, head coach of Duke University, said, “I am so proud of Robert Brickey. He was a terrific leader for us. Now he is taking that leadership to another step in becoming a head coach. I commend Dr. Newsome on an excellent choice.”

Al Carter, athletic director for Shaw University, said, “We are elated hire a coach with the stature of Robert Brickey. We look forward to a productive men’s basketball program.”

Michael Bernard was the head coach for three years at Shaw. His lifetime record was 362-202. His first-year record at Shaw was 21-9 and his time at Shaw totaled a record of 40-46. During the 2002-03 season the Bears earned a berth at NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regionals, finishing in the semi-finals.

“We wish Coach Bernard well in his future endeavors and appreciate his contributions to Shaw athletics,” Dr. Newsome said.
