In the season opener of the 2003-04 season, Shaw faced Augusta State and fell 62-60.  Trailing 37-30 at halftime the Shaw cagers played inspired ball in the second half, as they went on a 10-2 run to take a 40-39 lead on a lay-up by Damon Harrison with 14:31 remaining in the second half.  The Bears extended their lead to 51-44 on a jumper by Ricky Williams (nine points) with 10:17 remaining.  But the Jaguars came back and pulled to within one on two free throws by Patrick Curran with 1:13 remaining.  A Jason Mills lay-up gave the Jaguars the lead with 35 seconds remaining.  Chas Bailey's (15 points) jumper from the left baseline for the lead with under five seconds remaining rimmed out.  Darius Acuff led the Bears with 16 points.  Ron Colbert had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

After playing in only 14 games last season with both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Sonics, Murray started the first game of this career.  He scored 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting as the Sonics beat the Clippers 109-100.  Murray was the only Sonic starter to shoot over 50 percent from the field.

"I've been saying all along that all I needed was an opportunity," Murray told the Seattle Times. "I knew I could do it. It's just basketball. I've been playing basketball my entire life.

Bears Survive and Advance; Will Face St. Aug's in Quarterfinals
Raleigh, NC—It was touch-and-go for most of the game, but the “Battle of Raleigh” may now commence.

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s eastern division third seed survived a scare from the west’s sixth seeded Blue Bears of Livingstone College, winning 73-62, advancing to the second round of the 2003 CIAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Bears (20-7) will now face neighbor St. Augustine’s, in Thursday’s second round game at 9 p.m.

After neither team held a lead of greater than four points throughout the contest, the Bears got an Alphonso Riley jumper with 1:03 left to take a 65-59 lead. The Blue Bears (6-21) did not score again until there were 10 seconds remaining.

The Bears hit four free throws and Anthony Greenup dunked twice in the final 10 seconds for the Bears’ final margin.

“They (Blue Bears) played a good basketball game. I don’t think we were looking ahead, it was just a tough game,” said Bears head coach Mike Bernard.

The Bears main option in the second half was their All-CIAA forward Kenyon Booker, who responded with 11 of his 16 points in the stanza.

The Blue Bears had a golden opportunity with 8:25 left in the game as Booker first picked up his fourth foul. Bernard did not take Booker out of the game and he was whistled for his fifth foul 23 seconds later as he was tagged with a charge.

Leading 54-52, the Blue Bears went cold from the field at that point as the Bears turned up their defensive pressure and would manage just three field goals the rest of the way.

With Booker gone, Anthony Greenup and Mike McLeod became the Bears go-to guys and they responded with six and five points, respectively, in the final eight minutes.

Greenup would finish with a game-high 22 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots while McLeod managed 11 points and four assists. Alphonso Riley, who played the last 10 minutes of the second half with four fouls, chipped in with 13 points.

The Blue Bears kept themselves in the game throughout with their three-point shooting. JC Henry hit 4-of-7 from behind the arc and paced the Blue Bears with 20 points.

Olufemi Abiodun scored 10 points in the first half and that was how he would finish as the Bears put the clamps on him defensively in the second half. Jerome LaGrange would add 10 points and seven assists to the Blue Bears totals.
