Shaw defeated by saint paul’s
Bears Losing Streak Stretched
to Three
February 5, 2008 – Lawrenceville, VA – The Shaw University Bears traveled to Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium to take on the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College. Despite outscoring their opponents 49 to 22 in post production, the Bears dropped the loss, 72 – 64 to SPC. The Bears record now stands at 4 – 16 Overall, 1 – 12 CIAA, and 1 – 5 Division.
The home team hobbled away from half-court with possession of the tip-off. SPC’s #30 Maurice Reevey deposited the first two points of the contest. Shortly thereafter, Shaw’s #30 Damola “Mr. Post Man” Obadina (Forward / 6 – 5 / 240 / Senior / Minneapolis, MN) made his first basket. The Bears bumped up to a 4 – 2 lead after #21 Brandon “Game Time” Greene (Forward / 6 – 6 / 210 / Slidell, LA) soared behind the backboard and then flipped in a lay-up. Then, the Tigers’ #00 Shahumaad Jones shook up the gym with a monstrous dunk to tie the game for the third time, 8 – 8 with 14 minutes left in the first half. Shaw unloosened the tie to take a three point lead with back to back buckets by #5 Brandon “All American” Armistead (Guard / 6 – 3 / 190 / Brooklyn, NY). The Bears doubled their point margin advantage, 17 – 11, an offensive rebound and put-back by Greene. However, at the 5:43 mark, the Tigers tied the competition again at 19 – 19, when #11 Anthony Wynn scored on a baseline drive. SPC stepped out to lead 21 – 19 with another gym-gyrating slam by Jones. In the final two minutes, the Tigers operated with a 10 – 3 scoring run to lead 31 – 22 at the intermission.
Shaw’s #11 John “Down Town” Douros (Guard / 6 – 2 / 180 / Raleigh, NC) dialed in a long distance three-pointer to cap a 12 – 5 scoring run in the first eight minutes of the second half. SPC requested a timeout at the 12:00 minutes mark. Unfortunately, SPC would go back up by double digits, 44 – 34, with 8:05 remaining in the match-up after a plethora of post productions. SPC maintained their momentum to hold onto a 54 – 43 lead as they took a full timeout at the 3:36 mark. As time quickly diminished, the Bears began to find more success from inside the post and beyond the arc. Shaw shot 48.3% (14 of 29) from the field in the second half. In addition, the Bears accumulated 33 bench points. Shaw marched back to be within eight, 59 – 51, with another three-pointer and a two made free throws by Douros. With less than thirty seconds on the game clock, the Bears continued to keep their chance for a comeback alive as a quick lay-up by #1 Will “Takeover” Graham (Guard / 5 – 10 / 175 / Minneapolis, MN) escorted Shaw within five, 68 – 63. However, the Tigers used game clock management and multiple conversions at the charity stripe to secure the success.
Leading the Bears in scoring was #21 Brandon Greene with 17 points (a game high nine rebounds / three steals). In addition, Shaw’s #11 John Douros scored 10 points (one rebounds / three steals).
The Shaw University Bears will bus to Bowie, MD to take on the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on Saturday, February 9, 2008. The televised CIAA match-up is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
