Three Bears’ Score in double-figures

Bears fall 58-79 to Virginia State

 

Ettrick, VA –The Bears fall to 3-23 overall and 1-18 in the CIAA while Virginia State improved to 18-7 overall, and 13-5 in conference play.  Three Bears were able to score in double-figures as they were led by junior Cori Gaither (6’5, Forward, Jacksonville, FL) who scored game-high 15 points and added five assists on the night for the Bears.

 

The score would go back and forth until the Trojans took the led and never looked back. Shaw had the lead only once in the first half through out the entire contest. Shaw shot well in the first half hitting nine-of-21 (42.9%) and making five-of-seven (71.4%) from the charity stripe. Shaw would improve in the second half shooting 50 percent making 14-of-28 shots from the floor. Virginia State made 13-of-28 in the first half for the field and only got better in the second half.

 

Shaw scored 20 points off 18 VSU’s turnovers, 38 points in the paint and 23 points off the bench.  It just was not enough to hold off Virginia State. Also scoring in double-figures for the Bears was Robert Espinosa (6’7, JR, Forward, Plainfield, NJ) who dropped 12 points and Damola Obadina (6’5, JR, Forward, Minneapolis, MN) who scored 10 points and snatched five rebounds on the night.

 

Standing out for the Trojans was Avis Wyatt who scored team-high 14 points and recorded grabbed nine rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for VSU was Brian Henderson with 12, Trey Mines with 11 and Michael Askew with 10 points in the Trojans victory.

 

The Bears have will have the #11 spot in the upcoming CIAA tournament to be held in Charlotte, NC. The Bears will return to action on Thursday, February 22nd for their final game of the season before traveling to Charlotte, NC to compete for the CIAA crown. They take on the Blue Bears of Livingstone College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
