BEARS HAD FOUR PLAYERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES
Shaw fell 86-68 to Bowie State
RALEIGH, NC – The Bears record drops to 3-20 overall, 1-15 in the CIAA and 1-7 in the East after a hard felt loss to Bowie State University who improved to 15-5 overall, 11-5 in the CIAA and 5-2 in the Eastern Division. The Bears were led by Robert Espinosa who had 17 points and tied for a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bears shot poorly in the first hitting just nine-of-37 (24.3 percent) from the field while the Bulldogs knocked down 17-of-32 (53.1 percent) from the floor. BSU turned the ball over only 5 times in the first half which Shaw turned into six points. Shaw managed to out rebound the visitors 29-17 but trailed 38-25 at the break.
Shaw’s field goal shooting greatly improved in the second half, jumping up to 60.0 percent by hitting 15-of-25 from the floor, which included six-of-10 from behind the 3-point arc. Bowie State’s shooting would not be as great as the first half but it proved to be enough to get past the Bears. They shot 47.4 percent hitting 18 of their 38 shots and went a perfect 10 of 10 from the charity stripe.
Shaw’s Melvin Smith came off the Bears bench to score 13 points and Damola Obadina along with Kelvin Williams added another 11 points each for the Bears.
Standing out for the Bulldogs were Tyrone Beale who scored game-high 31 points and Gil Goodrich added 14 points and a season-high 12 assists. Also adding to the Bulldogs was Jason Ingram and Orlando Wright chipped in 13 and 10 points respectively for the Bulldogs on the night.
The Bears will return to action on Tuesday, February 13th as they travel to Richmond, VA to take on the Panthers of Virginia Union University.
