Raleigh, NC – In a game that many would call the battle of Raleigh between Saint Augustine’s College (7-4, 3-2 CIAA) and Shaw University ( 2-9, 0-4 CIAA) Damola Obadina (6’5, JR, Forward, Minneapolis, MI) did the same thing he did two nights ago in another state, which was to record another double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Not only did Obadina have a double-double but the Bears played one of their best games of the year so far having all five starters in double figures.

In the first half, Shaw shot an impressive 43% from the floor and only 12% from beyond the 3-point arc. Having a great showing in the first half for the Bears was John Kornegay (5’11, JR, Guard, Detroit, MI) who had 13 points and three rebounds for the Bears. Shaw scored 18 points down in the paint. The Falcons had two players in double figures in the first to aid them in a 40-31 halftime lead. St. Augustine’s only shot 36% from the floor in the first half but it proved to be enough to go into the half leading.

In the second, Shaw shot 41% from the floor and 33% from beyond the 3-point arc. Showing up for the Bears was Robert Espinosa (6’7, JR, Forward, Plainfield, NJ) who scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in the second half.  Shaw would get back within a point of the Falcons after being down by as many as 13 points with a three point basket by Melvin Smith (6’3, JR, Guard, Roanoke, VA) with 1:11 to play in the game. It seemed like the Bears could not get anything going after that point and the Falcons would take over and go back up by eight to end the game 84-76.

Shaw would have all five of their starters in double figures: Cori Gaither (6’5, JR, Forward, Jacksonville, FL) had 11 points and 6 rebounds, Espinosa had 13 points and 6 rebounds, Obadina had 11 points and 13 rebounds, Kornegay had 21 points and 5 rebounds and Smith had 14 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds in the Bears hard fought loss to the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s College.

The Bears of Shaw University will be back in action on Tuesday, January 9th as they host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State. Game time is 5:30 pm
